The Return of Character: Why Australian Interiors Are Embracing Personality

For years, Australian interiors have leaned towards clean lines, neutral palettes and carefully considered minimalism. But recently, there has been a noticeable shift. Homes are becoming warmer, more expressive and, above all, more personal.

Colour is returning to walls and furniture, vintage pieces are being mixed with contemporary design, and natural materials are being embraced for their texture and imperfections. Rather than creating spaces that feel perfectly styled, there is a growing appreciation for interiors that feel lived-in, collected and full of character.

This return to personality reflects a broader shift in Australian interior design — one where individuality is becoming just as important as aesthetics.

Character Over Perfection

The idea of the perfectly styled home is slowly making way for something more authentic. Rather than matching every element within a room, homeowners and designers are embracing contrast, unexpected details and pieces that have a story to tell.

A contemporary sofa might sit alongside a vintage armchair. An original fireplace might become the centrepiece of a modern renovation. Artwork, books, ceramics and personal objects can add layers of personality without making a space feel overly styled.

The beauty lies in the combination. These details make a home feel as though it has evolved naturally over time, rather than being designed all at once.

The Return of Colour

After years of predominantly neutral interiors, colour is making a welcome return to Australian homes.

Warm browns, deep greens, earthy reds, muted blues and rich ochres are appearing across living spaces, kitchens and bedrooms. Sometimes the effect is subtle, introduced through artwork or furniture, while other interiors embrace colour across walls, cabinetry and joinery.

Colour brings atmosphere to a space. It can make a room feel intimate, energetic or calm, while also creating a stronger visual identity.

For photography and film, this makes colourful interiors particularly compelling. A distinctive palette can establish the mood of an image before anything else is introduced.

Texture and Natural Materials

Character isn’t only created through colour. Increasingly, it is coming through the materials themselves.

Timber, natural stone, linen, plaster, aged metals and handmade ceramics bring a sense of warmth and tactility to interiors. Their natural variations and imperfections create depth, particularly when they interact with natural light.

This approach feels particularly suited to Australian homes, where the connection between interior and exterior is often an important part of the design.

Rather than hiding imperfections, contemporary interiors are allowing materials to show their natural qualities. The result is a more relaxed and grounded aesthetic that feels both sophisticated and authentic.

The Rise of the Collected Home

One of the most appealing aspects of character-led interiors is the idea of the collected home.

Instead of purchasing everything as part of one carefully coordinated scheme, spaces are being built gradually. Vintage furniture, family heirlooms, artwork, travel finds and contemporary pieces can all sit together to create an interior that feels uniquely personal.

These are the spaces that tell stories.

A well-loved chair, an unusual piece of art or a collection of ceramics can say more about the people who live in a home than a perfectly styled room ever could.

For photographers and filmmakers, these details also create visual interest. They provide natural moments within a frame and help a location feel authentic rather than staged.

Why Character Makes a Great Location

For creative productions, character-filled interiors offer more than an attractive backdrop. They provide atmosphere, texture and a sense of narrative.

A beautifully considered home can immediately establish the mood of a campaign or editorial. Architectural details can become part of the composition, while artwork, furniture and collected objects add layers without requiring extensive styling.

This is what makes distinctive homes such valuable photoshoot and filming locations. Their character gives creatives something to work with from the moment they arrive.

Across the Pure Locations collection, there are homes that reflect this shift in Australian interiors — from art-filled spaces and heritage properties to colourful contemporary homes and locations rich in natural materials.

A More Personal Australian Interior

Perhaps the most exciting thing about this shift is that there is no single definition of what an Australian interior should look like. The new Australian aesthetic is becoming more individual, with homeowners embracing the colours, materials, objects and architectural details that feel meaningful to them.

The result is a move away from interiors designed purely to look beautiful and towards spaces designed to feel like home. They are imperfect, layered and personal — and often all the more beautiful for it.

At Pure Locations, these are the spaces that continue to inspire us. Homes with atmosphere, character and a story of their own, offering more than just a backdrop for photography and film. Because when a location has personality, it doesn’t simply sit within the frame — it becomes part of the story.
